Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You are the expert on yourself. You know how you feel about things in your life, what makes you upset, and what makes you happy… right? So, if you are the expert than why would you need therapy? Therapy is an opportunity to take what you know about yourself and examine the pieces that you may not understand or want to admit to. Because therapy offers a judgement free environment, clients are free to discuss what they need to in order to find growth and courage to change. Therapist help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges. You know therapy is right for you when you are interested in getting the most out of your life. Therapy will help you take responsibility for the pieces you have control over, create a deeper insight, and develop new skills to live a balanced and fulfilling life. When you know you need to change and are ready to have support in that process, therapy will help you get there.

How does therapy work?

Every therapy session is unique and tailored to the individual or couple, focusing on your specific needs, strengths, and goals. During your first session we will go over the new client forms and policies regarding the therapeutic relationship and limits of confidentiality. Then we will discuss what brought you to therapy and what your goals are. With every new client I typically start by going over important information regarding your history in order to help you discover how you got where you are. Each additional session will focus on your primary goals and building and maintaining a healthy balance in your life. The process is collaborative. In order for therapy to be effective, you are expected to take an active role in the process, both during and between sessions. As the process of change differs from person to person, the length of therapy is determined by you, your needs, and your progress towards your goals.

Do you accept Insurance?

I currently accept multiple insurances please see my fees and insurance page. If you do not see your insurance company listed, please check back in the future. Additionally, I would be happy to send you an invoice for you to submit to either your flex spending account or your insurance carrier to determine if your sessions with me qualify for reimbursement through out-of-network coverage. I also accept cash, check, and all major credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express).

Is therapy confidential?

It is important to note that therapy for the most part is confidential. The law protects the confidentiality of most communication between a client and therapist. This is one of the many reasons as to why therapy works. When you feel comfortable in session, you are free to discuss whatever comes to you without fear of judgement. However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. These exceptions include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken. Psychiatric hospitalization may be necessary in some cases.
These exceptions are in place to protect the client and people in the community from harm. Other than these exceptions, therapy is confidential and all information requires written permission from the client prior to being disclosed.
